Food in Corfu?

It is a fact that on this island to present a table laid with food is a major, concern; the right food for the right season. Sofrito on Sundays, Pastitsada at celebrations, bianco and horta (boiled greens) for everyday meals and always home made wine. In winter there's bourdetto or beans and renga (kippered herrings), salted cod and skordalia (garlic sauce) on March 25th (to celebrate both Annunciation and Independence Day). Egg and lemon soup is on the table at Easter. In spring there's a dish of artichokes and broad beans, during summer tomato salad and fish, and whatever wine is left.

Corfiot cuisine is typically Mediterranean. While it makes use of the usual ingredients, like oil, pepper, dried beans, pasta and vegetables, the cuisine differs from the rest of Greece because of' climatological conditions and certain Venetian habits. Certainly you will find mousaka and village salad, but it is worth searching for the real traditional cuisine of Corfu, whose history began long ago.

Due to the lack of game in Corfu, the people lived on the products of the soil and the sea. The soil gave them olives for oil, beans, vegetables and greens. From the sea came fish and shellfish in abundance. They tended to cook in casseroles rather than by frying or roasting.

Of course, casserole cooking is popular all over Greece, but in Corfu it is habitual. From the beginning, the island's peasants lived in poverty and misery, a situation that intensified during the Venetian era due to the imposition of a policy of monoculture of olives at the expense of other crops. The peasants made their own bread, oil and wine, they picked wild and cultivated greens from the fields and caught fish, then they cooked everything together and ate it with lots of broth, to soak their bread in.

Today, we can find briam and other Turkish style dishes, which were introduced by Greeks who fled to Corfu from the Turkish occupied mainland. From the Venetians came many dishes with spaghetti, pasta and meat. You'll also find fresh and tasty fish, because the Corfiots (especially taverna owners) continue to fish and cook their catch in many different ways.

Family run restaurant over looking the beach. Great view of Ag. Stefanos and the beach.

The Original!

This restaurant was the first in the village and it has been passed on from father to son. Through the years is has been greatly modernised and has good clean kitchens.

This restaurant must be one of the best places to eat during sunset.

Located towards the church at the end of town, just before Golden Beach Hotel. It is run by the same team that used to run Elpida's

The menu is of good quality. Be prepared to wait as each meal is individually prepared. Cooking is done by a local Irish girl.

One of the better places in Ag. Stefanos, Booking is advisable in the height of season.

A shock to the village!

Formally known as "Symposium" and before that "Zorba's", the restaurant is not run by a village local however the food is excellent (traditional Greek) and well priced for what you get.

This restaurant is more upmarket and the quality is probably the best in Ag. Stefanos (be prepared to wait for your food).
