Spianada - The Esplanade
The central square and largest square in Europe extends from one end
of the town to the other. On one side you can see the thickly settled
city whilst on the other is the old castle.
You can enjoy many pleasures on the Spianada, at one end you may laze
on the beach and go for a swim, or perhaps enjoy an ice or a cool beer
in one of the cafes. Whatever you do you can enjoy watching the parade
of passers by.
The cricket pitch in the lower part of the Square gives great fame to
the Spianada. It is still in use more than a century after British rule.
In the upper Square stands another memento of British occupation, an old
time peristyle dedicated to the first High Commissioner of the island,
Sir Thomas Maitland. Today, this has been adapted to an elegant green
old-fashioned bandstand used for Sunday concerts.
