Car Tours
For those who decide to hire a car, here are 3 suggested
routes, each of which gives an enjoyable day out!
Follow the road through Ipsos. The road winds along the northern
coast through Barbati and Nissaki. North of here is some of
the prettiest coastal scenery in Corfu, particularly at Kalami
and Kouloura, with their tall cypress trees and tiny harbours.
Carry on to Kassiopi, a large fishing village facing north
to Albania, and try one of the many waterside bars or tavernas.
From Kassiopi the road is sign posted to Archaravi and Roda.
It runs along the north coast and has several rough tracks
off to the right, all leading to the beach, where you will
find many good bars and tavernas. From Acharavi you can turn
left to Agios Pandeleimon and skirt round Mount Pantokrator,
passing through Episkepsis and Strinillas and finishing back
in Ipsos and then towards Corfu Town.
Follow the road through Dassia, turning left at Tzavros, a
few hundred yards along this road turn right towards Danilia
Village, through Temploni. The road winds through the Ropa
Valley - where Aqualand (water theme park) in Ag. Ioannis
is located and the golf course and horse riding at Ermones
on the west coast. At Glyfada there is a long sandy beach
with good swimming and some small tavernas, whilst above the
beach is the village of Pelekas. It has some bars, cafes and
discos and from here you can watch fabulous sunsets from the
Kaisers seat. From Pelekas drive across country towards Kinopiastes
and then south towards Benitses or west to Agios Gordios another
long sandy beach, as well as many bars and tavernas on the
beach.
Follow the road through Dassia, turning left at Tzavros towards
Corfu Town. Take the road out past the airport. After a few
kilometres the road forks left to Benitses and Perama or straight
on to Kinopiastes. Take the straight road and you will come
to one of the prettiest hilltop villages - Agii Deka. From
here you descend down the eastern side of the island to join
the coastal road just before Messonghi. Once here you can
return to Corfu Town passing through Benitses and Perama with
a good view of Mouse Island or you can turn to the right and
continue driving to the southern tip of the island at Kavos.
Bypassing Messonghi Village, the road will lead you past Lake
Korrisou and just past there a right turn will take you to
Agios Georgios (South).
From Sidari, take the road west through Avliotes, past the
town square and up the hill. Turn left following the sign
to Ag. Stefanos. Keep following the signs to Ag Stefanos, where
after 3km you emerge above the bay at Ag. Stefanos. Follow
the hill down and pass along the main street turning left
at the T junction. Go up the hill, turn right and down into
Arillas. Turn left at the T junction and follow the road out
of the village and up the hill. After about 3 km, turn right,
then bear immediately left which comes out at the north end
of Ag. Georgios (North) bay. Carry straight on to the bottom
of the hill, following the road along the beach (which veers
away then rejoins it). At the other end of the beach, the
road doubles back through a couple of hairpins, then away
from the village. After about 5km, you reach the village of
Pagi. Turn right and go all the way up the hill, through the
next village and up some more till you come out at the top
with one of the greatest views on the island looking north
over Ag. Georgios bay from where you can see most of the north
of the island, right round to Acharavi beach. From here, continue
to the end of the road and turn right which leads into the
village of Makrades where you will often see old men flagging
you down to give you road maps. There are many interesting
tourist shops here. In the centre of Makrades, turn right
towards Krini. Follow the road through the village to the
end where you come to the recently restored ruin of the castle
Angelokastro. Walk to the top where the views are fantastic.
Entrance is free. On returning to the car, drive back through
Krini to Makrades and turn right. After 3 km you reach the
village of Lakones where you can stop at one of the cliff
top tavernas such as BellaVista or Golden Fox overlooking
the bays of Paleokastritsa. Continue down the hill from Lakones,
turn right and follw the road into Paleokastritsa. The quick
way back is to follow the main road from Paleokastritsa towards
Corfu Town, then follow signs to Sidari.
