Religious Festivals
Greek religious festivals are based on the
Orthodox
Calendar, which differs from the Christian calendar
most of us are familiar with. What this means in practice
is that Easter and festivals asscociated with it are not
necessarily on the same days/weekends as they are in most
western countries.
| CLEAN MONDAY |
First Day of Lent, Bank Holiday.
|
| PALM SUNDAY |
St.
Spiridon Parade around the Esplanade. This is to celebrate the saving of Corfu
by St. Spiridon from the plague. | | GOOD FRIDAY | Processions
all around the town. | | EASTER SUNDAY | St.
Spiridon's procession all around the Esplanade to celebrate the freeing of Corfu
from the famine. After the procession at 11.am plates and crockery are smashed
all over the town. Between 11.30 and Midnight there are processions throughout
the island, but mainly in the Esplanade where they bring out St. Spiridon and
have a candlelit procession. | | AUGUST 15th | Bank
Holiday to celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. | | SEPTEMBER
14th | Bank Holiday. Holy Cross Day. | |
