Shopping for Gifts
Corfu offers a wide variety of gifts, below is what I think
are good buy's and also make a good gift to a friend/loved
one.
Furs are comparatively inexpensive in Greece, and if you have
ever thought of owning one, this would be a good time to buy
one. There is a selection of shops in Corfu town so don't
buy from the first shop you find. If you do decide to buy
a fur coat, the shop will usually have it delivered to England
(saves extra baggage). There are also a good choice of leather
jackets in the town, many with unusual designs.
The gold is generally of 14 or 18 carat, and will be weighted
to find the price. A lot of the designs are unique, and also
should you have your own idea, certain shops in town will
make it. Silver has always been a good buy, and again not
just jewellery, but also dishes and photo frames.
Everywhere you look on the island you will see olive trees
growing. From this wonderful wood, craftsman fashion numerous
household items and ornaments by hand. The wood is not vanished
but oiled or polished to show off the pretty grain. One such
shop is on Paneliniou street (marked as a tourist shopping
street), where the owner also works.
The pretty cheesecloth dresses are good value, as are the
cotton T shirts, generally much cheaper than UK, and of good
quality. The lace is all hand made and not cheap but very
beautiful.
Of course you must take some olive oil home, also the Metaxa
and Ouzo are a good buy. Also the nougat and the Greek (Turkish)
delight.
If making a large purchase, normally a discount is offered
if paying cash.
