Municipality of Esperion
Sidari
is one of the most beautiful and cheerful resorts in Corfu. Set amidst
rolling hills, fields and forests, the whole region is known for its relaxed
pace of life, wide open spaces and vibrant colours. Sidari itself has
extensive and safe sandy beaches, ample tourist facilities and a pleasantly
easy-going atmosphere. It's an ideal place for a family holiday in that
there is plenty for the kids to do and many amusements, water sports,
discos and so on for other members of the family. There are also numerous
shopping opportunities, excellent restaurants and bars, hotels and of
course the beach is never far away. There is plenty of opportunity too
for walks in the lush surrounding countryside or along the beaches that
stretch for miles either side of the town. You could also if you wish
take a boat to one of the offshore islands - Erikoussa, Othoni or Mathraki
where the fishing is good and peace and tranquility guaranteed (see Islands
link to the right of this page). Beyond Sidari en route to Roda you come
to the picturesque old village of Karoussades in the hills above the lovely
beach at Astrakeri.
Peroulades, just to the west of Sidari, is known for its sandstone cliffs
which form exquisite and ever changing bays and inlets as the sea moulds
and shapes them. The famous Canal d'Amour (originally a sand cave in the
form of a tunnel) is here. Initially named after a natural channel cut
by the sea in the sand cliffs, it was a place where lovers could be alone.
Time has changed the coastline but not love. Further west of the Canal
d'Amour there are many old villages and untouched beaches to explore.
This is an ideal area for walks and bicycle rides.
Agios Stefanos (or San Stefano) village, near to Avliotes, is situated
in the north west of the island and is a quiet family resort with magnificent
views and a lovely long sandy beach with shallow water. The village has
most of the standard facilities for holidaymakers like restaurants, bars,
supermarkets, gift shops, bakery, bike and car rentals and a general information
office. You can also enjoy most water sports and the less energetic can
play pool or other games since everything is close to the beach. There
are boat trips to the island which can be arranged through San Stefano
Travel. The 4 islands (3 inhabited, one deserted) are worth visiting for
their wild nature, traditional Greek way of life and crystal clear water.
Trips depart from the local harbour at the end of the village where you
can also buy fresh fish from the fishing boats when they return with their
early morning catch. But perhaps the greatest attraction of the village
is the view from the top of the hill where you can see San Stefano Bay,
nearby Arilla Bay, the cliffs and the islands offshore all at once, best
of course when the sun sets. The local people have a saying that if you
visit San Stefano once you will always be a regular visitor. For more
information on Ag. Stefanos, follow the link at the top of the page.
