Car Hire
We suggest that whether or not you intend to rent a vehicle you bring
your driving licence. Corfu is such a beautiful island that it is a must
to explore the island and its beaches.
Main roads are generally asphalted, but it is folly to drive at high
speed. Curves are not usually sign posted and they are not usually cambered,
so be careful When you see a sign to reduce speed or the warning of a
narrowed road, slow down promptly. Secondary roads are often narrow, serpentine
and steep and there may well be holes even in the best tarred stretches.
Animals also add to the risk and excitement of island driving!! Goats,
donkeys, sheep, chickens and gypsy carts may be encountered at any bend
- even in the immediate suburbs of the capital!
The following is a rough guide to renting cars:-
You get good service with the brand name car hire firms but you pay for
it. If you pick-up the car from the airport it is subject to a 6% airport
levy. Car hire charges are less out at your resort but check the details
of the insurance and if there is an excess should the car be damaged.
Local rates are generally cheaper in Corfu than pre-booking and paying
before departure. Unless you wish a car for your whole visit why not wait
and pick a few days when the weather is cloudy or the wind blowing.
Rates vary from place to place, but for local firms a rough guide is between
30-60 euro per day depending on type of vehicle. Be sure to check insurance
details and any excess mileage charges before leaving the depot, return
the vehicle with the same amount of fuel it had when you picked it up
(petrol is about 80 euro cents a litre) and remember to bring your driving
license.
